According to the San Francisco Environment Department, the US wastes almost 40% of the food we produce. In San Francisco, "over 12,800 tons of potentially donatable food goes into our composting or landfill bins".
Although it is illegal to throw away food in SF, many food banks and non-profits have trouble storing and cooking the donations they receive. Renew SF Bay is highlighting the ways that restaurants are repurposing their excess ingredients, and showing ways for anyone to reduce the food waste they produce, so that we can help the city work towards a more waste-conscious future.
